Over 319,000 Ohio men served in Union Forces during the Civil War. Trumbull County was well represented in the Union Army and Navy. Many volunteered while others were drafted. Trumbull County men were also found in other Ohio units, various Pennsylvania regiments; as the county lies on the border with that state, as well as serving in many other states, the regular U.S. Army, and even a couple of Confederate units!
list of veterans has been compiled from cemetery records, the Trumbull
County Recorders Office, G.A.R. records, "The History of Trumbull
County" by Harriet Taylor-Upton, 1909, war-era newspapers, various township,
village, and city published histories, pensioner census, and other
sources. It is as complete as available resources have enabled me to compile.
Additions are welcomed if documented. Photos and letters of any of these
men are also welcomed. I have tried to verify each soldier from at least
two sources. All names were verified through official rosters. Place of
residence is listed where known as are the cemeteries where the veteran
is buried. Most veterans listed are Trumbull County natives while
others were residents of Trumbull County after the war but active in the
local G.A.R. and are listed for genealogical purposes.
New resources are always being cross-checked against the database and names are being added or removed if verification
of residency in Trumbull County can not be found.
